uBlock Origin Lite (uBOL) is a free, open-source browser extension developed by Raymond Hill. It is designed around the Manifest V3 extension platform and uses filtering rules managed by your browser to block requests that match known advertising and tracking patterns.
It belongs to the uBlock Origin family, but it does not have exactly the same architecture or controls as the full extension. Lite focuses on ready-to-use rulesets and straightforward filtering levels. Your results depend on which browser you use, the permissions you allow and the sites you visit.
uBO Lite uses the browser's declarativeNetRequest filtering system. Instead of checking every request through a continuously running extension process, it gives the browser prepared rules that identify certain ad, tracking and other unwanted resources. When a request matches an applicable blocking rule, the browser can stop that request.
Network filtering is only part of the experience. With the appropriate website permissions, Optimal or Complete filtering modes can also hide selected page elements or apply relevant scriptlet filters. These capabilities explain why a website may look different when you change filtering modes.
For many people, the goal is simple: read articles, use websites and browse without as many distracting banners or tracking requests. uBlock Origin Lite helps reduce some of that clutter by applying known filter rules inside a supported browser. It is especially useful for users who prefer an extension that starts working with prepared rulesets rather than requiring advanced configuration.
Lite also fits the direction of modern browser extension APIs. Its browser-managed filtering can reduce the need for a constantly active extension process, although actual page speed and resource savings vary with the sites you visit and the browser you use. It cannot promise to remove every ad, and it does not block advertisements inside unrelated desktop applications.
Easy to get started: choose your browser in the downloads section, review the extension permissions, and follow the relevant browser’s manual setup instructions. Built-in lists, including widely used ad- and privacy-related rulesets, provide a useful starting point without requiring you to write filters yourself.
Control when you need it: the extension lets you adjust filtering per website. If a page stops working correctly, you can review its permissions or lower filtering for that site. Current versions also include tools for certain custom cosmetic filters; read the official quick guide for updated instructions.
There is no need to use the strongest setting everywhere. The default is intended to be Optimal when the required site permissions are granted. If a site has unwanted empty spaces, or breaks after filtering, review its individual settings before changing the default for every website.
| Mode | How it behaves | Best used for |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | Blocks matching network requests; does not run cosmetic or scriptlet-based filtering. | Sites where limited permissions or simpler blocking are preferred. |
| Optimal Intended default | Adds applicable cosmetic and scriptlet filtering when access is allowed. | A useful starting point for regular browsing. |
| Complete | Also permits generic cosmetic filtering where supported and authorized. | Sites where unwanted placeholders remain visible. |
Permissions and platform behaviour can differ. See official troubleshooting instructions.
Lite is built for Manifest V3 with simpler preset modes. Full uBlock Origin offers a broader set of advanced controls on browsers that support it. Choose based on your browser's extension support and the filtering features you actually need.
Common questions about release downloads, browser compatibility, privacy and how uBlock Origin Lite works.
uBlock Origin Lite (uBOL) is a free, open-source browser content blocker based on the Manifest V3 extension API. It uses browser-managed filtering rules to help block matching advertising and tracking requests.
The original extension is free and open source. You can download original release archives here. Verify release authenticity and permissions before installing; these downloads do not install the extension automatically.
No. Lite was designed for the Manifest V3 browser extension platform. It differs from full uBlock Origin in filtering architecture and available controls. Which version is suitable depends on your browser and needs.
This site offers original release archives for Chromium/Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari. Installation differs by browser; a ZIP or XPI download alone does not install or pin an extension.
Basic provides network request filtering with fewer site permissions. Optimal enables more site content filtering when permission is available. Complete can provide additional cosmetic filtering for selected sites. You can also turn filtering off for a site.
Filtering depends on website changes, active rules, the selected mode and site permissions. Check that Lite is enabled, review its filtering mode for that website and consult the official troubleshooting guide. No blocker can guarantee removal of every ad.
uBlock Origin Lite is a browser extension, not a standalone Windows .exe or macOS desktop ad-blocker. On a computer you install it inside a supported browser; separate system-wide ad blockers are different products.
No. A browser extension operates in the browsers where it is installed; it does not automatically filter advertisements across all applications on your device.
Yes. Current releases support custom cosmetic filters and related controls, although available features and permissions differ from full uBlock Origin. Consult the official Quick guide for current steps.
